How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session
A newborn photography session is a special time to capture your baby’s first days. But many parents wonder: “How do I prepare so everything goes smoothly?” With a little planning, your session can be relaxed, enjoyable, and produce timeless images you’ll treasure forever.
Here’s a complete guide for parents booking newborn photography on the Sunshine Coast, in my Bli Bli studio.
Feeding and sleeping tips
Newborn sessions work best when your baby is well-fed and comfortable:
Feed your baby shortly before you set off so they are content and sleepy. A top up of milk when you arrive at the studio can sometimes help to keep them sleepy and content.
Bring a spare bottle or breastfeed before and during the shoot — a happy baby makes for smoother photos. There will be plenty of time for feed breaks.
Timing sessions for when babies are naturally sleepy (usually between 5–14 days old) helps capture those peaceful, snuggled images. It is important to let me know if bubs arrives early or late and we can adjust the date of the session accordingly.
Bring essentials for baby
Make sure you bring the items that keep your baby comfortable:
Nappies and wipes
A change of outfit and blankets if needed for the way home
Pacifier or comforter
Breast pads to pop in your bra during the shoot
This ensures your session flows smoothly, and we can focus on creating beautiful portraits.
Preparing siblings and family
If siblings or other family members will join the session:
I provide some items of clothing for siblings, however if you would rather bring your own clothes for siblings, please see my what to wear guide here.
Keep younger children well-rested and fed before the session.
Prepare them by talking about the photoshoot and that your friend Nikki the photographer will be taking the images. This gives them a sense of safety around the shoot and helps them realise there is nothing to worry about.
Including siblings in photos creates timeless family memories.
What to expect during the session
My newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed, safe, and enjoyable:
Sessions typically last 1.5 – 2.5 hours, allowing for feeding and settling breaks.
I guide every pose to ensure your baby’s comfort and safety.
I use soft, natural lighting to create timeless portraits.
You will find snacks for the whole family and toys in another area of my home. This is a safe place where partners can take the siblings to entertain them there whilst baby gets the rest of their photos taken. As a paediatric nurse of over 19 years, I know what children and families need in order to make the shoot run smoothly.
You can simply relax while I capture the moments that matter most.
Safety and comfort in the studio
Your baby’s safety is my top priority:
The studio is warm, clean, and cozy.
All props and wraps are soft and sanitized between shoots.
Hand sanitiser is used throughout the shoot.
Gentle handling ensures newborns are comfortable and calm throughout the session.
Parents often feel reassured knowing their baby is in experienced hands.
