Introducing a new baby to the family is exciting — but when it comes to newborn photography, many parents ask: “How do I prepare siblings for the session?” Older children can sometimes feel nervous, shy, or restless during a photoshoot, so a little preparation can make a big difference.

If you’re planning a newborn photography session on the Sunshine Coast, here’s a guide to help siblings feel comfortable, happy, and involved.

Talk About the Session in Advance

Children often respond well when they know what to expect:

Explain that you are all going to see your friend Nikki the photographer. Talking about your photographer on first name terms helps them feel safe and reassured.

Show them examples of newborn photos on my website, so they understand what will happen.

Emphasize that the baby is going to be getting photos taken of them and that they will be a part of that.

A brief conversation before the session helps older siblings feel included and excited rather than anxious.

Plan for Comfort and Routine

Siblings are more cooperative when their needs are met:

Make sure they are well-rested and fed before the session

I do provide a platter of snacks for the whole family but you are welcome to bring your own from home too. Snacks will be eaten outside of the studio to ensure the studio stays clean and crumb free.

Encourage quiet play during the shoot. When you arrive I will show you and your children where the toys and books are that they can play with between shots. This usually makes them feel instantly at home and ready to engage.

Keeping siblings comfortable ensures the session runs smoothly for everyone.

Clothing and Styling Tips

Coordinating outfits helps create harmonious family photos:

I provide clothing for siblings up to 8 years of age, however there may be times you need to provide the trousers, shorts or tops etc to make the full outfit.

Choose neutral, soft colours for siblings that complement parents and baby

Avoid bold patterns, logos, or characters that distract from the baby

Keep clothing comfortable and easy to move in, especially for active toddlers

This helps create cohesive, timeless images for your family album.

Activities During the Session

During the photoshoot:

Invite siblings to interact gently with the baby

Take breaks to allow movement and play, especially for toddlers. As mentioned above, I provide a range of books and toys for children to play with between shots. I will direct you so you know when you can take siblings out for some downtime. Children must be supervised by the adult who is not having their photo taken at that time.

Encourage small helpers — holding a hand, giving a gentle kiss, or helping with blankets. Kids love to feel helpful and encouraging this throughout the session will make them feel very much a part of the session too.

Positive involvement makes siblings feel proud and included in the session.
