What to Wear for Your Newborn Photography Session

One of the most common questions I get from parents is: “What should we wear for our newborn photography session?” Choosing the right outfits helps your photos look timeless, coordinated, and stress-free — while keeping your baby comfortable.

Here’s a simple guide for parents planning a newborn session on the Sunshine Coast with me.

Choosing outfits for your baby

For newborns, less is often more and here’s the cool part:

I provide your little ones outfits for the session so one less thing to worry about for you. In my newborn client wardrobe you will find:

The softest hand knitted items in: Creams and browns, which really help to create timeless images.

Simple textures: I style the images with soft wraps, blankets, and knitted items to add warmth and interest without overpowering the photo.

Here’s what I avoid – bright patterns: Bold colours or busy patterns can distract from your baby.

Comfort is key: Outfits I provide are easy to remove or adjust for feeding and wrapping.

What parents should wear

Coordinating outfits for parents makes the family photos feel cohesive. I also have a client wardrobe for mothers which includes a range of beautiful cotton and knitted dresses. I will send you a newborn preparation guide prior to our shoot which includes images of the beautiful dresses I have for you to wear.

For dads, I recommend the following:-

Stick to neutral colours: Beige, cream and earthy tones often work best.

Avoid logos or text: These can date the photos quickly and also be a distraction in the image.

Simple and classic: A plain shirt, or soft knit top keeps the focus on your baby.

Tip: Think about textures rather than patterns — knitted sweaters, linen shirts, and soft cotton look great on camera.

Including siblings in the session

If you have older children, include them in your newborn photos:

I have a beautiful selection of sibling clothing up to 8 years of age. These include the softest tulle skirts, heirloom style knitted sweaters, and timeless dresses.

If you would rather bring your own clothes for siblings then here are my top tips: Avoid cartoon characters or bold logos that draw attention away from the baby.

Choose something comfortable to help them feel relaxed during the session.

Stick to neutral or earthy tones  to help create a warm and cosy image.
