Newborn Photography Safety Tips on the Sunshine Coast
When it comes to newborn photography, safety is always the top priority. Parents often ask: “How do photographers keep babies safe during a session?” Knowing what to expect can give you peace of mind and make the experience enjoyable for the whole family.
If you’re planning a newborn photography session on the Sunshine Coast, here are my essential safety tips to ensure your baby is protected and comfortable.
1. Experienced Handling
Professional newborn photographers are trained to handle babies gently and safely. Being a paediatric nurse I have over 19 years of handling babies and working with families. Here are some things you should know about your newborn’s safety during a session with me:
Every pose is guided with support and care
Babies are never forced into positions
Hands-on adjustments are made slowly, ensuring comfort at all times
This ensures the baby’s wellbeing while capturing beautiful, natural poses.
2. Warm, Comfortable Environment
Newborns are sensitive to temperature, so maintaining a cozy environment in my studio is key:
Studio sessions are kept warm and draft-free
Soft blankets, wraps, and props are used to protect baby’s skin
Babies are monitored constantly for comfort and safety
A controlled environment is especially important for very young newborns under 2 weeks old.
3. Safe Props and Equipment
Not all props are safe for newborns. You can rest assured my professional studio uses the following to keep your baby safe:
Sanitized wraps and blankets
Soft, stable surfaces for posing
Equipment designed specifically for newborn photography
4. Supervised Sessions at All Times
Babies are never left unattended
Every pose and prop adjustment is carefully supervised
Feeding and comfort breaks are included as needed
Supervision ensures that the session is stress-free and safe for both baby and parents.
5. Blue card approved
Always check if your newborn photographer has a current blue card. In Queensland, Australia, a blue card regulates people working with children/babies to ensure children are kept safe.
A blue card should be current
Your photographer should provide evidence of a blue care when asked
No I wont be offended when you ask to see my blue card
Your babies safety is my priority.
6. Up to date Vaccinations
Although not legally required, I always ensure my vaccinations are up to date.
Whooping cough boosters are recommended every 10 years for people working with children. Yes mine is current
Yearly flu jabs always
No I wont be offended when you ask about my vaccination status.
