One of the most common questions I hear from parents is: “What’s the best age for newborn photos?” Capturing those first few weeks of life is magical, but timing matters to ensure your baby is comfortable, sleepy, and content.

If you’re planning a newborn photography session on the Sunshine Coast, here’s everything you need to know to get the perfect photos at the perfect time.

Why Timing Matters

Newborn photography works best during the baby’s first two weeks of life. During this window:

Babies are naturally sleepy, making it easier to pose them safely

Swaddling and gentle positioning are simple and stress-free

Skin tones, hair, and delicate newborn features are at their softest

Baby acne usually appears around the two week mark.

Booking too late can make posed photos more difficult, as babies grow more alert and have more awake time.

The Ideal Window: 5–14 Days Old

The majority of professional newborn photographers recommend scheduling sessions between 5 and 14 days after birth.

5–14 days: Babies are typically very sleepy and curl naturally, perfect for studio poses. Feeding is usually established by day 5 and everyone is getting into the groove of their new little family.

Sessions outside this window are still possible, but the style may shift more toward posed lifestyle photos rather than classic curled-up newborn portraits.

Booking During Pregnancy

To secure your preferred date:

Book between 16–25 weeks of pregnancy

Provide your due date so we can tentatively schedule the session

Confirm once your baby arrives
