When mums start planning their maternity session, one of the first questions they usually ask is, “What should I wear for my maternity photos?”

Choosing the right outfit can make a huge difference in how your images look and feel. The goal is to select clothing that highlights your beautiful bump while helping you feel confident and comfortable.

As a Sunshine Coast maternity photographer, I always guide my clients with styling suggestions to ensure their photos feel timeless and natural.

Comfort Is Key

Pregnancy is an incredible journey, but it can also be physically demanding. Choosing something comfortable allows you to relax and enjoy the session.

Which style dress is best for me?

If dresses are more your style, long flowing dresses are one of the most popular choices for maternity photography. They move beautifully in the breeze and create a soft, elegant look in photos, especially during sunrise or sunset sessions at the beach.

Flowy fabrics such as chiffon, cotton, or linen photograph beautifully and help create that dreamy maternity style many mums love.

Within my client wardrobe I have a selection of flowy and fitted dresses. Fitted dresses photograph just as well and really emphasise your beautiful bump.

Neutral and Earthy Colours Work Best

Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully in natural light and complement the stunning outdoor locations we have here on the Sunshine Coast.

Some lovely colour choices include:

Avoid Busy Patterns and Large Logos

While patterns can be fun, very bold prints or logos can distract from the most important part of the photo — your beautiful growing belly.

Simple outfits with soft textures usually photograph best and help create a more classic and elegant feel.

If your partner or children will be joining your session, coordinating colours works much better than matching exactly.
